Doe Bay Fest 09
- Tickets on Sale NOW |
Meet
the People of Doe Bay
Doe Bay has the perfect combination of an idyllic
setting inhabited by eclectic people. Our guests are our favorites
because they provide the fuel to keep the resort alive. However,
our staff, interns and volunteers make everything happen everyday.
To help you associate names with faces, we include some photos
and comments about the people of Doe Bay.
The photo above was taken last week on a Sucia
Island Tour. Doe Bay staff arrived back to Orcas with their
batteries charged for the season after a sun-drenched stay
on Sucia Island where they hiked to sandy beaches and cliff-side
caves.
Accompanying the crew of happy employees was
retired park ranger Dave Carlson who knows the island like
the back of his hand. Anybody who wants to spend a day hiking
through beautiful views should consider hopping on a boat
over to Sucia! Get details at the Doe Bay front desk when
you check in, or go to OUTER
Island . The Doe Bay staff trip was courtesy of Outer
Island Express – thanks Captain Beau!
Jim.... WWoofer extraordinaire!
Jim, pictured above, is part
of a Wwoofers duo we know as Jim and Cami.
His contribution to this property through a combination of
his hard work and his substantial talents has been immense.
We hope, and expect, that Jim is someone you will see at Doe
Bay for many years to come.
While the photos above and below show Wwoofers, Michael
and Katelyn, enjoying some rest time in the sun on
the point at Doe Bay, they have already been great contributors
to the success of our garden.
Abigael’s kitchen crew has been growing as the busy
season descends upon us. Our new line chef, Jonathan,
is shown here at the end of a long shift enjoying a well deserved
pizza.
Thomas is a relative of our general manager
and has proven himself to be a utility player; he does it
all. He is shown in this photo, standing in front of the wall
that he painted during our kitchen remodel last week and also
standing in front of the dishes which he had been washing
during a busy weekend shift.
We are lucky to have college students come
and spend their summers with us. It involves a lot of hard
work and a summer of living in a tent but, in addition to
our low pay, we provide memories of a lifetime. Pictured above
is Brett who is interning on the housekeeping
staff while on summer leave from Whitman college.

Front Desk. As reservations are pouring
in and activity at the store increases daily, we have added
to our front desk staff. First of all, we introduce Michael
(above) who is neighbor and a friend and does a great job
at our front desk. Our newest arrival is Jill
who will likewise be answering your calls, checking you in
and checking you out.
Finally and last but not least.....
Tessa is back! Come see her
in the cafe!

Kids in the Spa!
In addition to the cafe and all of our grounds and our new
swing & slide, we have now revised our Spa rules to allow
children as guests. This required balancing of different interests
and some compromise, but you should be pleased.
Children must be potty trained, accompanied by an adult and
those under 12 will be limited in their hours of use. This
should allow all to enjoy and still retain the peace and quiet
in the evenings that our adults so appreciate.

Dear
Friends of Doe Bay,
I face the challenge this month of sending a Newsletter that talks
about June without mentioning my birthday.
I am somewhat obsessed and will admit that I have not walked by
a calendar for 20 years without circling a particular unmentionable
date, even when it falls on a superstitious Friday.
But I am going to use some self discipline and move on without mentioning
the actual date, lest I receive birthday e-mails from our thousands
of readers.
It seems like readers enjoy contests and giveaways, so I will give
a free night on your birthday at the resort and a birthday dessert
to anyone (else) who has a birthday on June 13th.
(Valid ID required.) I first came to Doe Bay by boat as a 17 year
old young hippie tub jumper in 1971, so do the math.
I know that you had a great Memorial Day weekend
because the weather in the Northwest was great. That said, Doe Bay
was spectacular. I started off with a visit to Bite of Orcas
at the Farmer's Market in Eastsound. Make
sure that you visit the market if you are here on a weekend from
now through September.
I was pleased to see our Executive Chef Abigael
and Dining Room Manager Freddy, handing out Lavender
Honey Ice Cream sandwiches to the happy attendees. They were home
made and hand made with Meyer Lemon cookies (with lemons which evidently
walked themselves across the border from Canada) with the home made
organic ice cream in the middle. They were a hit.
Homesick Elephant plays the Doe Bay Cafe....
Thursday nights are still open
mic and we have so many great musicians that the signup
list is usually full by 7:30. So bring your talent and your instrument
and get there early. The pizza is worth the effort and the entertainment
is a bonus. Saturday nights are almost always
live music nights and this weekend was great.
Homesick
Elephant (pictured above) performed
and were perfect.

The Doe Bay Organic Garden and Orchard
The garden is growing again and
it is incredible. Many of us still refer to it as Katie’s
garden, in homage to the work of a long time employee and friend
who really got our garden off the ground. Since Katie’s original
start, the garden has more than doubled in size. I am pleased to
introduce our new garden manager, Heather. She
has a big job, but she is burning with enthusiasm as well as talent
and experience. She also has a crew of volunteers and Wwoofers which
should make our goal of having the Doe Bay garden be a center piece
of our property and philosophy, a reality. The garden is already
producing wonderful produce and vegetables for our café and
our executive chef, Abigael, is serving food on a regular basis
that was in the ground only hours before it is on the plate.
In addition to expanding the garden, we have now incorporated part
of our orchard inside the garden fence. We are so fortunate to have
our new general manager, Pliny Keep, bring, along
with his other talents, substantial experience as an orchardist.
You see above a picture of our new handmade garden gate, the new
worm bin complete with an educational window to show kids how worms
do whatever it is that they do in the cycle of the garden and some
shots of the garden as a work in process. Among the recent accomplishments,
we have dedicated one well to providing irrigation for our garden
and have upgraded our composting policies and procedures to maximum
efficiency. When you visit Doe Bay, please inquire about spending
a few hours volunteering in the garden. If you don’t feel
like getting your hands dirty, please at least schedule a time for
a garden tour where you can learn about what we are doing, how we
are doing it and why. Again, our goal is to have our garden be an
educational show piece garden promoting sustainable, organic gardening.

Doe Bay Fest 09
We are excited to make several announcements:
The Doe Bay Fest 09 Lineup
We received over 60 submissions of bands wanting to participate
in Doe Bay Fest 09 on the weekend of Aug. 13th – 16th. It
was an enormously difficult task to eliminate any, as there was
great talent in the pool. We are thrilled to confirm the following:
The Long Winters,
The Maldives, Hey Marseilles, Friday
Mile, David Bazan, Weinland,
The Moon Doggies, Slender
Means, Drew Grow and the Pastors' Wives,
Spanish for 100, The Lonely Forest,
Goldfinch, Tito Ramsey and
more. This is a stellar initial lineup with bands who are some of
the hottest attractions in the Northwest from Fremont and Capital
Hill block parties to Sasquatch and Bumbershoot. If you see these
bands this summer, tell them that you can't wait for Doe Bay Fest
09! (For links to band sites, Join the group Doe
Bay Fest on Facebook!)
The Doe Bay Fest 09 Logo

We have selected a logo again, designed by our favorite artist, Irene
Wood, of Seattle. We hope that you will enjoy it. We are currently
finalizing some clothing items with the 2nd annual Doe Bay Fest logo.
You will surely want to have one of these collector items, especially
40 years from now when Woodstock is celebrating its 80th and Doe Bay
Fest, its 42nd.
Doe Bay Fest 09 Tickets
In order to be anywhere on the property during Doe Bay Fest, you
will have to have a festival ticket and wrist band. Tickets are
available online at brownpapertickets.com
You may purchase now by clicking
on the bird.....
In addition, you may purchase tickets by visiting the front desk
at Doe Bay or by calling the front desk. (360)
376-2291. All tickets are $30.00, but children 12
and under are free. We expect all festival tickets to sell out.
If there are any left on the day of the show, they will be $40.00.
The only exception to the $30.00 pricing is if you purchase the
ticket in person at the Doe Bay store, the price is $25.00. Do the
math! With several of you coming to the festival, saving $5.00 each
practically pays for a visit to Doe Bay, please come up and see
us.
Doe Bay Fest 09 Accommodations
We are opening reservations effective immediately after delivery of
this newsletter. We expect accommodations at Doe Bay to sell out within
hours of this announcement. Please contact us immediately at (360)
376-2291. After we have assigned all cabins, yurts,
domes and camp sites, we will open up overflow camping. The price
for overflow camping will be reduced to $35.00 per site plus $20 per
person over double occupancy. It includes use of the soaking tubs,
sauna and other Doe Bay features. We have picked one of the traditionally
best weather weekends of the year, so please consider camping as a
great way to attend Doe Bay Fest. Camping requires a two night stay
and all other accomodations require three nights. Try to come on Thursday
to enjoy the first music of the weekend. If you need accommodations
for Saturday night only, we have approximately 12 nearby offsite cabins
sleeping 10 to 15 people each , available Saturday night along with
a free shuttle service.
Doe Bay Fest 09 Food
Most of you know the Doe Bay café serves the most incredible
breakfasts, lunches and dinners in the Northwest. However, with hundreds
of festival goers visiting us that day, we will be setting up several
additional food vending sites in the music area. Our café serves
gourmet organic food, including fresh local seafood. The food provided
in the field will allow for a broader spectrum with several of the
Doe Bay Fest committee members voting for a hot grill with chicken,
bratwursts, and maybe even some sliders. While those animals are not
on my diet, I am not judgmental. We will be working with some of our
friends on the Island to be food purveyors for the weekend and we
promise you that the food will be hot and tasty while you enjoy soft
drinks or beer and wine in our beer garden and the great music.
Other Details about Doe Bay Fest
09
We have many more things to tell you but
hopefully we have inspired you enough to mark your calendar to go
online to buy tickets to reserve a chance to attend the festival
and to contact us regarding accommodations. We are very excited
about Doe Bay Fest and look forward to seeing you.
Until next month,
I am Wishing you Health, Peace and Prosperity…
Post-script: Theater Under the Stars
This is too important not to mention! On Thursday July 9th, the
Bard comes to the Doe Bay stage!

Pizza Night and Open Mic
Doe Bay Having Fun and Supporting Our Community |
|
| Join the Doe Bay Café for outstanding
pizza and live entertainment every Thursday from 5-10pm at Pizza,
Beer, and Open Mic Night! Eat, drink, and be merry while supporting
a local non-profit at the same time! Each week, one dollar from
every pizza sold is donated to an organization doing important work
in our local community. Some of the organizations that have received
funding from Doe Bay Open Mic include the Orcas Island Historical
Museum, Orcas Rec, Island Oil Spill Association, Orcas Farm-to-Cafeteria
program, Sea Doc Society, and many more.
This ‘$1 for community pie’ affair is just one of
the ways that Doe Bay Resort supports our island community. Our
café uses almost 100% local produce and organic products.
Most are grown right here in our own organic garden and the balance
are purchased from Orcas farmers. We support local purveyors of
many island-based goods, like organic locally roasted fair trade
coffee, island-brewed chai, locally produced ice cream, local authors
and artists, and herbal body care products that are made just up
the road from Doe Bay. Doe Bay hosts an annual fundraiser BBQ for
the youth center on Orcas, the Funhouse, and donates
stays to a variety of non-profits for their annual fundraising auctions.
It’s an honor and pleasure to be able to give back to the
community that gives us so much to us! Come be part of the fun and
put your money where your mouth is?!
|
|
| We

|
| You may now let your friends know that

is a better deal than Moran or any other legal camping spot on the
island and includes use of the spa, (tubs and sauna) as well as
a shower house and a guest kitchen! The award winning Doe Bay cafe
is walking distance from every camp site!
Still not convinced? Reference this newsletter when you

Doe Bay welcomes
more WWoofers!
We are now scheduled through Labor Day! Consider a Fall or Winter
Visit! |
|
|
The WWOOF program is going great guns at Doe Bay. The garden has
been expanded and has never looked better! The reaction of our guest
WWoofer's has been great. It is different from many WWOOF farms
because we have the SEED to TABLE program and so many activities
on site. All guest workers are able to enjoy the Soaking Tubs and
Sauna and other elements of the Doe Bay lifestyle.
As you now probably know, WWOOF is a worldwide organization of
people dedicated to Organic gardening who trade labor for accommodations
at farms throughout the world. WWOOF
USA Website Doe Bay recently joined WWOOF and has already received
a flurry of requests for stays. To learn more,
please see our website
>>>
Group Work
Retreats - Bring your group to work in the Garden!
<<< Our strawberries
will come from their work!
Another volunteer option is to come up for a weekend with a group
of able bodied folks. We tailor each visit, but the general idea
is that we exchange a two-night / three-day stay for you and your
group for a half day of work in the garden or on the grounds.
The particular jobs are season dependant as well as a function
of what the property needs. They may include pure organic gardening,
trail or brush clearing, cleaning or painting or even brainstorming.
If you are interested, please contact us by writing to DoeBayVolunteers@Gmail.com.
Our volunteer coordinator (who is also a volunteer) will get right
back to you.

Enjoy these Videos
from Doe Bay |
|
|
Please post your Doe Bay videos to YouTube or the Server of your
choice and let us know about them. We will link them in our newsletter.
Here are two of my favorites:
New
Years Fireworks -The impromptu show was great but
the enthusiasm of the videographer was palpable, contagious and
hilarious!
Fire
Dance on St Paddy's Day - This was one really cool
event. I could tell you a lot about it but the video speaks for
itself. The photo shows a didgeridoo which is one of the instruments
that showed up.

HELP WANTED --- Salesperson / Marketer / Public Relations Expert
Wanted!! |
|
|
Doe Bay is looking for a person to help us tell
our story. Would you like to trade your expertise for ridiculously
little money? Or better yet, would you like to barter? This is a
chance to teach us how to sell what we have created. Our product
is great but we don't tell the story well!
Maybe you are "between positions" as they
say and working in paradise appeals to you? Why not? Or maybe you
are a College marketing major who decided to pass on that internship
at the local Chrysler dealer? Send your resume
along with an e-mail cover letter telling us what you can do. Come
up to Orcas and make cold calls to every place on the island that
should know about us. Then, try San Juan Island. If you show results,
the sky's the limit; Maybe even Shaw island or a trip to the City
(Mount Vernon)? I look forward to hearing from you!
